| 2 | WHEREAS, Recently, land near Dwight was rezoned to allow | ||||||
| 3 | for the operation of an immigration detention center; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, The Virginia-based Immigration Centers of America | ||||||
| 5 | is in the process of securing a federal contract to build an | ||||||
| 6 | immigration detention center to serve the Chicago area that | ||||||
| 7 | would house an estimated 1,000 people; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Housing, transporting, and watching over migrant | ||||||
| 9 | children detained along the southwest border has become a | ||||||
| 10 | multibillion dollar business for private companies; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, This lucrative and secretive business is mired in | ||||||
| 12 | controversial practices such as breaking up families and | ||||||
| 13 | locking children in cages; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Profiting off of putting people in cages is | ||||||
| 15 | morally bankrupt and not something that the State of Illinois | ||||||
| 16 | should be supporting; therefore, be it

| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 18 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 19 | we urge the State of Illinois to divest from any for-profit | ||||||
| 20 | companies that contract to shelter migrant children; and be it | ||||||

| 2 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 3 | delivered to the Illinois State Board of Investment, the State | ||||||
| 4 | Universities Retirement System, the Teachers' Retirement | ||||||
| 5 | System, and the Office of the Governor.
