HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Judge
4Raymond Myles, who passed away on April 10, 2017 at the age of
566; and
6 WHEREAS, Judge Myles graduated from Harrison High School in
71968; he received his Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from the
8University of Illinois in 1972 and his Master of Arts in Social
9Work in 1974; he received his Juris Doctor from the University
10of Illinois in 1977; and
11 WHEREAS, Judge Myles worked for a time in Springfield
12before returning to Chicago and joining the Cook County State's
13Attorney's Office; he left that position and started in private
14practice; and
15 WHEREAS, Judge Myles was appointed to the Circuit Court of
16Cook County in 1999; and
17 WHEREAS, Judge Myles doled out advice and tough love from
18the bench, monitoring probation and linking defendants to jobs
19and education; he kept a stash of collared shirts for anyone
20who arrived without one, which he would sometimes launder
21himself; one defendant, who confessed that he never wore ties

1to court because he did not own any, received a bag of neckties
2taken from the closet of Judge Myles; and
3 WHEREAS, After his first year on the bench, Judge Myles
4began an annual tradition: a courtroom graduation party for
5anyone on his docket who received a diploma or GED; as many as
6a dozen defendants would show up, many making the trip to the
7courthouse even though they no longer were required to do so by
8a probation officer; he would even go to high school
9graduations to see his defendants get their diplomas in person,
10sometimes years after the last time he had seen them in court;
11and
12 WHEREAS, Judge Myles remembered whether defendants had
13children or ailing relatives, and asked about them, often
14reminding them that they needed to succeed to make a better
15life for their loved one; and
16 WHEREAS, Judge Myles really liked that he could actually
17make a difference, and did not want to send anyone to jail or
18prison; therefore, be it
19 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
20HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21mourn the passing of Judge Raymond Miles, and extend our
22sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew

1and loved him; and be it further
2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Judge Myles as an expression of our
4deepest sympathy.
