HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Mamie Till-Mobley was a courageous and powerful
3civil rights activist whose tragic loss of her son, Emmett
4Till, to racial violence in 1955 became a turning point for the
5civil rights movement; and
6 WHEREAS, Despite her unimaginable grief, Mamie Till-Mobley
7refused to remain silent, insisting on an open casket funeral
8for her son so the world could see the brutality of racism and
9the violence it could provoke; and
10 WHEREAS, Through her brave act of speaking out against the
11brutal lynching of her son, Mamie Till-Mobley exposed the
12violence and racism of the Jim Crow era; and
13 WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mamie Till-Mobley continued
14to advocate for justice, working tirelessly to expose the
15evils of racism and to promote equality and fairness for all
16people; and
17 WHEREAS, Mamie Till-Mobley's legacy lives on today through
18the continued struggle for civil rights and social justice;
19and
20 WHEREAS, Mamie Till-Mobley was a remarkable woman, and it

1is important to honor her memory and to recognize the
2contributions she made to our nation and to the world; and
3 WHEREAS, On April 28, 2023, Mamie Till-Mobley and her son,
4Emmett Till, were honored at her alma mater, Argo Community
5High School, with the unveiling of the Mamie Till-Mobley and
6Emmett Till Memorial Walkway in Summit; therefore, be it
7 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we recognize the invaluable contributions of Mamie Till-Mobley
10to the cause of civil rights and social justice, and we honor
11her memory and legacy as a powerful force for positive change;
12and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That we pledge to continue Mamie Till-Mobley's
14work by standing against racism and prejudice and by working
15tirelessly to promote a more just and equitable society for
16all; and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
18presented to the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation and
19Argo Community High School as a symbol of our respect and
20esteem.
