1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death | ||||||
3 | for both men and women, and within every ethnic population, in | ||||||
4 | Illinois, the United States and the world, this year killing | ||||||
5 | more Americans than breast, prostate, and colon cancer | ||||||
6 | combined; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, In the United States in 2010, about 222,520 new | ||||||
8 | cases of lung cancer were estimated to be diagnosed (116,750 | ||||||
9 | among men and 105,770 among women); and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, In the United States in 2010, there were an | ||||||
11 | estimated 157,300 deaths from lung cancer (86,220 among men and | ||||||
12 | 71,080 among women), accounting for about 27% of all cancer | ||||||
13 | deaths; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2010, there were an estimated 9,190 | ||||||
15 | people diagnosed with lung cancer, and it is estimated that | ||||||
16 | over 6,490 residents succumbed to the disease;
and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Lung cancer causes include smoking, secondhand | ||||||
18 | smoke, exposure to toxins and known carcinogens, and genetic | ||||||
19 | abnormalities;
and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, 80% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed in people |

1 | who have never smoked or who have quit smoking;
and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, An estimated 90% of lung cancer deaths among men | ||||||
3 | and approximately 80% of lung cancer deaths among women are | ||||||
4 | attributed to smoking; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Lung cancer has a poor prognosis; even with | ||||||
6 | treatment, people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer have | ||||||
7 | a 5-year survival rate of less than 5 percent; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Increased awareness and coordination among all | ||||||
9 | stakeholders, including federal and state governments, | ||||||
10 | providers, patient groups, community leaders and | ||||||
11 | organizations, the public, businesses, and researchers, is | ||||||
12 | critical to promote the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of | ||||||
13 | lung cancer; therefore, be it

14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
15 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
16 | we proclaim the month of November 2011 as Lung Cancer Awareness | ||||||
17 | Month in the State of Illinois.
