4 | WHEREAS, The Illinois Learning Standards in science build | ||||||
5 | on children's inherent curiosity and
introduce science at an | ||||||
6 | earlier age, when children have many questions about the world | ||||||
7 | and
how it works; and

8 | WHEREAS, The Illinois Learning Standards in science help | ||||||
9 | students acquire a deep understanding
of core science and | ||||||
10 | engineering concepts through applying them to real-world | ||||||
11 | situations; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Educators across Illinois have transformed | ||||||
13 | science education in the classroom to give
students the | ||||||
14 | foundation they need to tackle complex issues in college and in | ||||||
15 | their careers; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Today, science education in Illinois emphasizes | ||||||
17 | an engaged, hands-on learning
experience, in which teachers | ||||||
18 | facilitate student-led inquiry, discussion, research, and

19 | experiments; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, The Illinois State Board of Education believes a |

1 | high-quality science education equips
students with the | ||||||
2 | knowledge and skills, such as communication, collaboration, | ||||||
3 | inquiry, and
flexibility, that are necessary for all careers; | ||||||

5 | WHEREAS, Ensuring all students have access to a | ||||||
6 | high-quality science education is crucial to
developing the | ||||||
7 | innovative thinkers Illinois needs to lead the country and the | ||||||
8 | world; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Illinois, the country, and the world face known | ||||||
10 | and unknown challenges in the fields
of medicine, technology, | ||||||
11 | climate, and energy; equitable access to science education will
| ||||||
12 | help this and future generations solve these challenges; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, April 22, 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the | ||||||
14 | first-ever national Earth Day; therefore, be it
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
16 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
17 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare April 22, 2019 | ||||||
18 | through April 26, 2019 as Illinois Science Education Week to
| ||||||
19 | celebrate and acknowledge science education across the State of | ||||||
20 | Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
