| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Based out of the Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, the | ||||||
| 3 | Norwood Park Historical Society (NPHS) was established on | ||||||
| 4 | September 6, 1973 to preserve, protect, and share the history | ||||||
| 5 | of Norwood Park; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, An entirely volunteer-run operation, the NPHS | ||||||
| 7 | maintains a local history museum, archives, exhibits, and an | ||||||
| 8 | event space on the northwest side of Chicago; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, The NPHS hosts a variety of events, including | ||||||
| 10 | general interest programs, game nights, and knit and crochet | ||||||
| 11 | nights, along with other special events; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, NPHS provides information on the evolution of | ||||||
| 13 | Norwood Park as a prairie, farm community, village, and now | ||||||
| 14 | vibrant city neighborhood; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, In 1831, Mark Noble Sr. arrived in the Chicago | ||||||
| 16 | Settlement from Yorkshire, England, and he and Margaret Noble | ||||||
| 17 | purchased real estate, including 150 acres of prairie that is | ||||||
| 18 | now Norwood Park; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, The Nobles built their home on Union Ridge, being | ||||||
| 20 | the first non-indigenous residents in the area, and their sawn | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | lumber home is the oldest existing house in Chicago; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, In 1868, Thomas Seymour of Chicago's Board of | ||||||
| 3 | Trade and his wife, Louise, purchased the house and adjacent | ||||||
| 4 | property and then enlarged it with an Italianate addition; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, In 1916, Charlotte and Stuart Crippen purchased | ||||||
| 6 | the Noble-Seymour House and adjoining property as a summer | ||||||
| 7 | residence and added plumbing and electricity, making Norwood | ||||||
| 8 | Park their permanent residence; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, On New Year's Eve 1987, Agnes Crippen, the | ||||||
| 10 | daughter-in-law of Charlotte and Stuart, and her children sold | ||||||
| 11 | the house and remaining land to the Norwood Park Historical | ||||||
| 12 | Society, bringing a beloved addition for the NPHS in the new | ||||||
| 13 | year; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, The NPHS made its headquarters in the | ||||||
| 15 | Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, including a museum, archives, and | ||||||
| 16 | meeting space; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, On May 11, 1988, the Noble-Seymour-Crippen House | ||||||
| 18 | was designated a City of Chicago Historical Landmark, and on | ||||||
| 19 | August 10, 2000, it was listed on the National Register of | ||||||
| 20 | Historic Places; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Exhibits in the museum maintained by the NPHS | ||||||
| 2 | include Margaret Crippen's 20th century period-decorated | ||||||
| 3 | bedroom, photographs and maps displaying Norwood Park's | ||||||
| 4 | history, "Vanishing Norwood Park" to show the community's | ||||||
| 5 | changes over the years, and "Can You Dig It?" with artifacts | ||||||
| 6 | uncovered from the residence's lawn; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, The Norwood Park Historical Society has preserved | ||||||
| 8 | the history of Norwood Park for half a century and enriched its | ||||||
| 9 | community by connecting residents with their neighborhood's | ||||||
| 10 | history; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 11 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 12 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 13 | we congratulate the Norwood Park Historical Society on 50 | ||||||
| 14 | years of establishment.
