HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the staff,
4faculty, students, and alumni of St. Joseph High School in
5Westchester as they celebrate the institution's golden
6anniversary; and
7 WHEREAS, St. Joseph High School in Westchester was founded
8in 1960; St. Joseph High School is a Catholic, co-educational,
9college-preparatory high school sponsored by the Lasallian
10Christian Brothers; and
11 WHEREAS, After the closing of Immaculate Heart of Mary High
12School, St. Joseph High School became co-educational and moved
13into the former Immaculate Heart of Mary building to
14accommodate an expanding enrollment; and
15 WHEREAS, St. Joseph High School's curriculum has received
16the highest rating offered by the North Central Association of
17Colleges and Universities; St. Joseph High School was the first
18high school in the Chicago area, and one of a select few high
19schools' in the country, to employ a one-to-one laptop learning
20program, where each student uses a laptop computer, every day,
21for every class; St. Joseph High School embraces technology
22resulting in students who are more effective critical thinkers,

1problem solvers, communicators, and researchers; and
2 WHEREAS, St. Joseph High School produces technology-savvy
3students who are excellently prepared to meet the demands of an
4evolving global society; St. Joseph High School is the only
5high school with a credentialed Men's and Women's Leadership
6Academy, which teaches leadership skills in a daily class for
7each of its students; St. Joseph High School strengthens the
8character of students through a constant focus on faith and
9service based on Lasallian Christian Brother traditions; St.
10Joseph High School fosters a family atmosphere and provides
11personalized attention to all students; and
12 WHEREAS, St. Joseph High School converted to a
13co-educational mission to accommodate Immaculate Heart of Mary
14students and other young women from the area; in addition,
15innovative single gender and co-educational class options were
16developed for all students; St. Joseph High School welcomes
17students from all backgrounds, resulting in a tremendously
18diverse enrollment composed of students from different racial,
19academic, economic, social, and religious backgrounds coming
20from more than 100 elementary schools in and around Chicago and
21its suburbs; St. Joseph High School transforms diversity into
22an asset by teaching students to work successfully with others
23from multiple backgrounds, resulting in young men and women
24genuinely prepared for the real world; St. Joseph High School

1understands the value of change and incorporates new ideas for
2an increasingly relevant education; St. Joseph High School is a
3school where 99% of graduates, regardless of background, are
4accepted into their college of first choice; and
5 WHEREAS, On April 9, 2011, St. Joseph High School will
6celebrate its 50 years of educational excellence at the Golden
7Jubilee Gala; therefore, be it
8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we congratulate everyone involved in the 50th anniversary of
11St. Joseph High School and wish them continued success for
12years to come; and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to Donna Kiel, Principal of St. Joseph High School,
15as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
