| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to recognize H.D. Darby on his | ||||||
| 4 | accomplishments during the Civil Rights movement and for his | ||||||
| 5 | role in fighting for voter rights; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, In the early 1950s, H.D. Darby tried several times | ||||||
| 7 | to register to vote, but was denied each time, being told that | ||||||
| 8 | he did not "qualify"; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, H.D. Darby filled a lawsuit against the State of | ||||||
| 10 | Mississippi to be able to register to vote without having to | ||||||
| 11 | interpret the state's constitution; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, H.D. Darby was victorious in his lawsuit and that | ||||||
| 13 | victory gave African-Americans the right to vote in Mississippi | ||||||
| 14 | just as all other citizens could; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, H.D. Darby's grandson, Christopher Blanks, who is | ||||||
| 16 | a poet, author, and youth mentor and the founder of The Black | ||||||
| 17 | Abolition Movement for the Mind, Inc., continues to carry on | ||||||
| 18 | his family's tradition of community activism; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 20 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||

| 1 | recognize H.D. Darby on his accomplishments during the Civil | ||||||
| 2 | Rights movement and for his role in fighting for voter rights; | ||||||
| 3 | and be it further
| ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 5 | presented to the family of H.D. Darby as an expression of our | ||||||
| 6 | esteem and respect.
