2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the residents of | ||||||
4 | the City of Wheaton on the occasion of the city's | ||||||
5 | sesquicentennial anniversary on February 24, 2009; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Erastus Gary, along with Warren and Jesse Wheaton, | ||||||
7 | traveled from the eastern city of Pomfret, Connecticut to | ||||||
8 | present day Wheaton in the years 1837 and 1838; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, The founding fathers of Wheaton made a deal with | ||||||
10 | the railroad, securing a line to pass through the area, by | ||||||
11 | offering free land to the Galena Chicago Union Railroad; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, The railroad named the small town Wheaton; Wheaton | ||||||
13 | was incorporated as a village on February 24, 1859, with Warren | ||||||
14 | Wheaton serving as its first president; in 1890, Wheaton was | ||||||
15 | incorporated as a city; and

16 | WHEREAS, Since 1867 Wheaton has been the seat of the DuPage | ||||||
17 | County government; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, On February 17, 2005 the City of Wheaton became a | ||||||
19 | City of ONE, joining the global movement to fight AIDS and stop | ||||||
20 | poverty; and

1 | WHEREAS, the City of Wheaton has been recognized for | ||||||
2 | twenty-two years by the National Arbor Day Foundation as "Tree | ||||||
3 | City U.S.A." for its tree program; therefore, be it

4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
5 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
6 | congratulate the residents of the City of Wheaton on the | ||||||
7 | occasion of the city's sesquicentennial anniversary and wish | ||||||
8 | them continued success and happiness in the future; and be it | ||||||
9 | further

10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to Michael Gresk, Mayor of the City of Wheaton, as a | ||||||
12 | symbol of our esteem and respect.
