| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Hosea Peeples on | ||||||
| 4 | the occasion of her 109th birthday; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Hosea Peeples was born in February of 1900 in | ||||||
| 6 | Holcomb, Mississippi; she attended school at a one-room | ||||||
| 7 | schoolhouse in the local Masonic Hall; on Sundays, she and her | ||||||
| 8 | family went to the Tuscahoma AME Church in a wagon; while | ||||||
| 9 | there, she sat on the "mourner's bench", accepted Christ, and | ||||||
| 10 | was baptized at age 15; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, In 1926, Hosea Peeples left home to join two older | ||||||
| 12 | sisters who lived in Chicago; she found work as a domestic and | ||||||
| 13 | sent money back home to help her family; in 1931, she met the | ||||||
| 14 | love of her life, Gentry Peeples, whom she married in 1936; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Hosea Peeples was employed at Inland Steel for 32 | ||||||
| 16 | years until her retirement; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, In 1948, Hosea Peeples and her husband joined the | ||||||
| 18 | Grant Memorial AME Church under the pastorate of Rev. Harvey E. | ||||||
| 19 | Walden; she was recruited into the Gospel Choir the day she | ||||||
| 20 | joined and later became choir president; and

| 1 | WHEREAS, Hosea Peeples was involved in numerous activities | ||||||
| 2 | at the Grant Memorial AME Church; she was involved in many | ||||||
| 3 | fundraising efforts of the Gospel Choir and the Willing Workers | ||||||
| 4 | Club; she currently serves as Class Leader of Class #8 and is a | ||||||
| 5 | member of the Women's Missionary Society and the Sarah Hoffman | ||||||
| 6 | Memorial Sunday School Class; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Hosea Peeples is the oldest member of a family | ||||||
| 8 | blessed with great longevity, with her father living to the age | ||||||
| 9 | of 107, her mother living to the age of 105, and her sister | ||||||
| 10 | Edith living to the age of 106; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, A birthday reception will be held in Hosea | ||||||
| 12 | Peeples' honor on February 1, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at the Grant | ||||||
| 13 | Memorial AME Church; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 15 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 16 | congratulate Hosea Peeples on the occasion of her 109th | ||||||
| 17 | birthday and wish her many happy and healthy years to come; and | ||||||
| 18 | be it further

| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to Hosea Peeples as a symbol of our esteem and | ||||||
| 21 | respect.
