Bill Title: Amends the Local Government Employees Political Rights Act. Provides that any law enforcement officer who is elected to the Illinois General Assembly shall be granted a leave of absence without compensation during his or her term of office. Effective immediately.

1 | AN ACT concerning local government.
| |||||||||||||||||||
2 | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
| |||||||||||||||||||
3 | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political | |||||||||||||||||||
5 | Rights Act is amended by changing Section 12 as follows:

6 | (50 ILCS 135/12) | |||||||||||||||||||
7 | Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office. | |||||||||||||||||||
8 | (a) A member of any fire department or fire protection | |||||||||||||||||||
9 | district may: | |||||||||||||||||||
10 | (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve | |||||||||||||||||||
11 | in that public office if elected; | |||||||||||||||||||
12 | (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that | |||||||||||||||||||
13 | public office if appointed; and | |||||||||||||||||||
14 | (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on | |||||||||||||||||||
15 | duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters | |||||||||||||||||||
16 | for the public office for which the member is a candidate.

17 | (b) A firefighter or law enforcement officer who is elected | |||||||||||||||||||
18 | to the Illinois General Assembly shall, upon written | |||||||||||||||||||
19 | application to the employer, be granted a leave of absence | |||||||||||||||||||
20 | without compensation during his or her term of office.
