AN ACT concerning education.
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
represented in the General Assembly:
Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
27-23.15 as follows:
(105 ILCS 5/27-23.15 new)
Sec. 27-23.15. Family and consumer science. Beginning with
the 2020-2021 school year, each school district that maintains
grades 6 through 8 must include in its curriculum and require
all students in grades 6 through 8 to take a unit of
instruction on family and consumer science that includes, but
is not limited to, instruction on financial literacy, wellness,
personal hygiene, food preparation, nutrition, and emotional
intelligence. Instruction on a subject may be omitted from this
unit of instruction if the subject is incorporated in another
required course. The school board shall determine the minimum
amount of instructional time that qualifies as a unit of
instruction satisfying the requirements of this Section.
Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
becoming law.
