Bill Title: Amends the School Code. Permits school boards to approve Advanced Placement (AP) computer science courses as equivalent to high school mathematics or science. If approved, requires a school district to denote on a student's transcript that AP computer science qualifies as a math-based, quantitative course for students who take the course in their senior year. Provides that, in order for a school board to approve AP computer science as equivalent to high school mathematics, the student must be concurrently enrolled in or have successfully completed Algebra II.

105 ILCS 5/27-22.05

Amends the School Code. Permits school boards to approve Advanced Placement (AP) computer science courses as equivalent to high school mathematics or science. 1 AN ACT concerning education.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
527-22.05 as follows:
6 (105 ILCS 5/27-22.05)
7 Sec. 27-22.05. Required course substitute.
8 (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of this Article or
9this Code, a school board that maintains any of grades 9
10through 12 is authorized to adopt a policy under which a
11student who is enrolled in any of those grades may satisfy one
12or more high school course or graduation requirements,
13including but not limited to any requirements under Sections
1427-6 and 27-22, by substituting for and successfully completing
15in place of the high school course or graduation requirement a
16related vocational or technical education course. A vocational
17or technical education course shall not qualify as a related
18vocational or technical education course within the meaning of
19this Section unless it contains at least 50% of the content of
20the required course or graduation requirement for which it is
21substituted, as determined by the State Board of Education in
22accordance with standards that it shall adopt and uniformly
23apply for purposes of this Section. No vocational or technical

1education course may be substituted for a required course or
2graduation requirement under any policy adopted by a school
3board as authorized in this Section unless the pupil's parent
4or guardian first requests the substitution and approves it in
5writing on forms that the school district makes available for
6purposes of this Section.
7 (b) School boards may approve Advanced Placement (AP)
8computer science courses as equivalent to high school
9mathematics or science. If approved, a school district must
10denote on a student's transcript that AP computer science
11qualifies as a math-based, quantitative course for students who
12take the course in their senior year. In order for a school
13board to approve AP computer science as equivalent to high
14school mathematics, the student must be concurrently enrolled
15in or have successfully completed Algebra II.
