1 | AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 918

2 | AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 918 by replacing | ||||||
3 | everything after the enacting clause with the following:

4 | "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section | ||||||
5 | 14-6.07 as follows:
| ||||||
6 | (105 ILCS 5/14-6.07 new) | ||||||
7 | Sec. 14-6.07. Reading specialist. The school board of each | ||||||
8 | school district that maintains one or more elementary schools | ||||||
9 | may employ one full-time reading specialist in each of those | ||||||
10 | schools. The reading specialist shall have training in the | ||||||
11 | identification of and the appropriate interventions, | ||||||
12 | accommodations, and teaching techniques for students with | ||||||
13 | dyslexia or a related disorder and shall serve as an advisor on | ||||||
14 | dyslexia and related disorders. The reading specialist shall | ||||||
15 | have an understanding of the definition of dyslexia and a | ||||||
16 | working knowledge of (i) techniques to help a student on the |

1 | continuum of skills with dyslexia; (ii) dyslexia | ||||||
2 | characteristics that may manifest at different ages and grade | ||||||
3 | levels; (iii) the basic foundation of the keys to reading, | ||||||
4 | including multisensory, explicit, systemic, and structured | ||||||
5 | reading instruction; and (iv) appropriate interventions, | ||||||
6 | accommodations, and assistive technology supports for students | ||||||
7 | with dyslexia. ".
