1.
Section
144.32,
subsection
1,
Code
2019,
is
1
amended
to
read
as
follows:

1.
a.
If
a
person
other
than
a
funeral
director,
medical
3
examiner,
or
emergency
medical
service
assumes
custody
of
a
4
dead
body
or
fetus,
the
person
shall
secure
a
burial
transit
5
permit.
To
be
valid,
the
burial
transit
permit
must
be
issued
6
by
the
county
medical
examiner,
a
funeral
director,
or
the
7
state
registrar.
The
permit
shall
be
obtained
prior
to
the
8
removal
of
the
body
or
fetus
from
the
place
of
death
and
the
9
permit
shall
accompany
the
body
or
fetus
to
the
place
of
final
10
disposition.

b.
A
sheriff,
deputy
sheriff,
police
officer,
fire
fighter,
12
physician
or
osteopathic
physician
licensed
pursuant
to
13
chapter
148,
nurse
licensed
pursuant
to
chapter
152
or
152E,
or
14
emergency
medical
care
provider
as
defined
in
section
147A.1,
15
acting
under
contract
with
and
direction
of
a
funeral
director,
16
may,
while
off
duty,
transfer
a
dead
body
within
this
state
17
under
the
same
circumstances
as
a
funeral
director
so
long
18
as
such
person
uses
a
vehicle
owned
by
and
registered
to
a
19
funeral
establishment.
Such
a
person
shall
carry
evidence
of
20
an
existing
contract
with
a
funeral
director.
The
contracting
21
funeral
director
shall
fulfill
the
requirements
of
section
22
144.27,
subsection
1.

the

members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
allows
a
sheriff,
deputy
sheriff,
police
officer,

fire
fighter,
physician,
nurse,
or
emergency
medical
care

provider
to,
while
off
duty,
under
contract
with
a
funeral
29
director,
and
using
a
vehicle
owned
by
and
registered
to
30
a
funeral
establishment,
transfer
a
body
under
the
same
31
circumstances
as
a
funeral
director.
