WHEREAS,
an
estimated
394,000
adults
and
children

with
a
disability
live
in
Iowa
and
make
our
communities
4
stronger;
and
5
WHEREAS,
Iowa
supports
over
63,000
students
with
6
special
education
through
a
free
and
appropriate
7
public
education
designed
to
fit
those
students’
unique
8
needs;
and
9
WHEREAS,
students
with
disabilities
who
are
included
10
and
supported
in
integrated
schools
and
classrooms
11
are
more
likely
to
realize
their
full
academic
12
potential;
and
13
WHEREAS,
individuals
with
disabilities
who
are
14
included
and
supported
in
the
workforce
have
an
15
opportunity
to
earn
a
competitive
wage,
work
as
part
of
16
a
team,
and
support
a
strong
state
economy;
and
17
WHEREAS,
individuals
with
developmental
disabilities
18
who
are
involved
in
their
communities
are
more
likely
19
to
give
back
to
their
communities;
and
20
WHEREAS,
family
members
and
direct
support
21
professionals
of
individuals
with
disabilities
deserve
22
recognition
for
their
support
and
commitment
to
helping
23
their
loved
ones
achieve
their
best
life
as
independent

and
contributing
members
of
their
communities;
and

WHEREAS,
when
inclusion
becomes
a
way
of
life
and

every
citizen
is
supported
and
able
to
flourish
in

their
community,
Iowa
is
a
better
place
for
everyone
to

President
Ronald

officially
declared
Proclamation

designating
March
as
National
Disabilities
Awareness

Month
and
calling
for
people
to
provide
understanding,

encouragement,
and
opportunities
to
help
persons
with

disabilities
to
lead
productive,
fulfilling
lives;
NOW

THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate

designates
the
month
of
March
as
Disabilities
Awareness

Month
in
Iowa.
