                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
                             BY  DOTZLER
  1  1 A Resolution commending the results of Taiwan's 2016
  1  2    presidential election reaffirming support for
  1  3    increasing Taiwan's international profile and
  1  4    for strengthening and expanding sister=state ties
  1  5    between Iowa and Taiwan.
  1  6    WHEREAS, the State of Iowa is proud of the
  1  7 sister=state relationship it has enjoyed with
  1  8 Taiwan since 1989, marked by strong bilateral trade,
  1  9 educational and cultural exchange, and tourism; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, Taiwan shares the values of freedom,
  1 11 democracy, human rights, rule of law, peace, and
  1 12 prosperity with the United States and the State of
  1 13 Iowa; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, on January 16, 2016, Taiwan held its sixth
  1 15 direct presidential election, demonstrating again the
  1 16 strength and vitality of its democratic system and
  1 17 confirming that Taiwan is a beacon of democracy in the
  1 18 Asia=Pacific region and beyond; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, Taiwan is seeking to contribute to greater
  1 20 regional integration in the Asia=Pacific region and
  1 21 promote bilateral investment and trade relations with
  1 22 the United States; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 23    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  1 24 commends and supports Taiwan's mature and
  1 25 vital democracy, its continued pursuit of trade
  1 26 liberalization for further integration with the United
  1 27 States and other trade partners, and its participation
  1 28 in international organizations which impact the health,
  2  1 safety, and well=being of its people; and
  2  2    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
  2  3 Resolution be sent to the Taipei Economic and Cultural
  2  4 Office in Chicago, Illinois.
