                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
                             BY  BOWMAN
  1  1 A Resolution celebrating the 150th birthday of
  1  2    Robert A. Millikan by recognizing his significant
  1  3    contributions to the field of physics.
  1  4    WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan was born on March 22, 1868, in
  1  5 Morrison, Illinois; and
  1  6    WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan's family moved to McGregor,
  1  7 Iowa, in 1873 and Maquoketa, Iowa, in 1875; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan graduated from Maquoketa High
  1  9 School in 1885; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan considered growing up in
  1 11 Maquoketa to play a major role in his life, stating
  1 12 in his autobiography, "I regarded Maquoketa as pretty
  1 13 nearly an ideal town in which to be brought up"; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan went on to study physics at
  1 15 Columbia University and the Universities of Berlin and
  1 16 Gottingen in Germany; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan's experiments led to many
  1 18 important discoveries in the fields of electromagnetism
  1 19 and particle physics, including accurately determining
  1 20 the charge carried by an electron and proving
  1 21 that quantity to be constant, and verifying Albert
  1 22 Einstein's photoelectric equation while making the
  1 23 first direct photoelectric determination of Max
  1 24 Planck's constant "h"; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan won the Nobel Prize in Physics
  1 26 in 1923 "for his work on the elementary charge of
  1 27 electricity and on the photoelectric effect"; NOW
  1 28 THEREFORE,
  2  1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2  2 commemorates the 150th birthday of Robert A. Millikan
  2  3 by celebrating his international recognition in the
  2  4 scientific community and the historical importance of
  2  5 his professional work.
