Senate Resolution 102 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 102 BY DANIELSON A Resolution recognizing the month of April 2012 as 1 Genocide Awareness Month. 2 WHEREAS, the dawn of the 20th century was welcomed 3 as an age of science, an age of enlightenment, and an 4 age of prosperity and peace; and 5 WHEREAS, the 20th century also brought a century of 6 misery and death, including the Musa Dagh resistance in 7 1915 followed by the Armenian persecution, the Rape of 8 Nanking in 1937, the Holocaust of the 1930s and 1940s, 9 the killings in Cambodia in 1975, the massacres in 10 Bosnia in 1992, the slaughter in Rwanda in 1994, and 11 now in the 21st century the displacements and deaths in 12 Darfur; and 13 WHEREAS, all of these tragedies, separated by time 14 and distance, have one common thread, the murder of 15 men, women, and children, young and old alike, based 16 only on where they lived, what God they worshipped, 17 what language they spoke, or to what community they 18 belonged; and 19 WHEREAS, this phenomenon of organized mass murder 20 was given a unique name, genocide, in the last 21 century; and 22 WHEREAS, in the last 100 years genocide has 23 brought death and destruction to tens of millions of 24 people; and 25 WHEREAS, in the dawn of the 21st century the world 26 community must dedicate itself to the task of ending 27 genocide and creating the age of prosperity and peace 28 -1- LSB 5652SS (2) 84 jr/rj 1/ 2
S.R. 102 that was dreamed of over a century ago; NOW THEREFORE, 1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 recognizes the month of April 2012 as Genocide 3 Awareness Month and urges Iowa’s schools, universities, 4 and civic organizations to raise public awareness 5 of the history and horror of genocide and encourages 6 public debate on how genocide may be eliminated. 7 -2- LSB 5652SS (2) 84 jr/rj 2/ 2
