Senate File 402 - Introduced SENATE FILE BY HOGG A BILL FOR 1 An Act relating to information school counselors make available 2 as students develop and implement individual career and 3 academic plans. 4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA: TLSB 2177XS (2) 87 kh/jh/rj PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 279.61, subsection 3, Code 2017, is 1 2 amended to read as follows: 1 3 3. The superintendent of each school district shall 1 4 designate a team of education practitioners to carry out the 1 5 duties assigned to the school district under this section. 1 6 The team shall include but not be limited to a professional 1 7 school counselor; teachers, including career and technical 1 8 education teachers; and an individual responsible for 1 9 coordinating work=based learning activities. The team shall 1 10 regularly consult with representatives of employers, state 1 11 and local workforce systems and centers, higher education 1 12 institutions, and postsecondary career training programs. 1 13 A professional school counselor shall make available to 1 14 a student and the student's parent or guardian, as the 1 15 student develops and implements a plan under this section, 1 16 information on apprenticeships, including but not limited to 1 17 local apprenticeship opportunities and programs leading to a 1 18 credential certifying occupational proficiency. 1 19 EXPLANATION 1 20 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 1 21 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly. 1 22 This bill requires that a school district's professional 1 23 school counselor make available to a student and a student's 1 24 parent or guardian, as the student develops and implements 1 25 an individual career and academic plan, information on 1 26 apprenticeships, including local opportunities and programs 1 27 leading to a credential certifying occupational proficiency.
