  1  1    Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  280.13D  Interscholastic athletic
  1  2 contests and competitions == academic ineligibility.
  1  3    A student who is a contestant in interscholastic athletic
  1  4 contests or competitions and who is given a failing grade at
  1  5 the end of any grading period in any course for which credit
  1  6 is awarded shall be ineligible to dress for and compete in
  1  7 the next occurring interscholastic athletic contests and
  1  8 competitions in which the student is a contestant for a period
  1  9 of time equal to one=third of the applicable interscholastic
  1 10 athletic season. For purposes of this section, "grading period"
  1 11 means the period of time at the end of which a student in grades
  1 12 nine through twelve receives a final grade and course credit
  1 13 is awarded for passing grades.
  1 14                           EXPLANATION
  1 15 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
  1 16 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly.
  1 17    This bill provides that a student who is a contestant in
  1 18 interscholastic athletic contests or competitions and who is
  1 19 given a failing grade at the end of any grading period in any
  1 20 course for which credit is awarded shall be ineligible to dress
  1 21 for and compete in the next occurring interscholastic athletic
  1 22 contests and competitions in which the student is a contestant
  1 23 for a period of time equal to one=third of the applicable
  1 24 interscholastic athletic season.
  1 25    Administrative rules adopted by the state department of
  1 26 education currently provide that such a period of ineligibility
  1 27 shall last for 30 consecutive calendar days.
