S.F. 2154 Section 1. Section 256.7, subsection 28, Code 2022, is 1 amended to read as follows: 2 28. Adopt a set of core content standards applicable 3 to all students in kindergarten through grade twelve in 4 every school district and accredited nonpublic school. For 5 purposes of this subsection , “core content standards” includes 6 reading, mathematics, and science. The core content standards 7 for science for grades seven through twelve shall include 8 science-based information regarding the anthropogenic causes 9 of climate change. School districts and accredited nonpublic 10 schools shall include, at a minimum, the core content standards 11 adopted pursuant to this subsection in any set of locally 12 developed content standards. School districts and accredited 13 nonpublic schools are strongly encouraged to set higher 14 expectations in local standards. As changes in federal law or 15 regulation occur, the state board is authorized to amend the 16 core content standards as appropriate. 17 EXPLANATION 18 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 19 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 20 This bill relates to science instruction and the Iowa core 21 content standards applicable to certain specified students of 22 school districts and accredited nonpublic schools. 23 Current law requires the state board of education to adopt 24 a set of core content standards that apply to all students in 25 kindergarten through grade 12 in every school district and 26 accredited nonpublic school that includes reading, mathematics, 27 and science.
