Section 261.87, subsection 1, paragraph b, 1 subparagraph (3), unnumbered paragraph 1, Code 2019, is amended 2 to read as follows: 3 Is age eighteen through twenty-three and is described by any 4 of the following: 5 Sec. 2. Section 261.87, subsection 1, paragraph d, 6 unnumbered paragraph 1, Code 2019, is amended to read as 7 follows: 8 “Eligible surviving-child student” means a qualified student 9 who is under the age of twenty-six, or under the age of thirty 10 if the student is a veteran who is eligible for benefits, 11 or has exhausted the benefits, under the federal Post-9/11 12 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 ; who is not a 13 convicted felon as defined in section 910.15 ; and who meets any 14 of the following criteria: 15 EXPLANATION 16 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 17 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 18 This bill modifies age requirements for eligibility for 19 foster care and eligible surviving-child students under the all 20 Iowa opportunity scholarship program. 21 A requirement that certain foster care students be between 22 age 18 and 23 in order to be eligible for the program is 23 stricken, as is a requirement that the surviving child of a 24 peace officer, fire fighter, or sheriff or deputy sheriff be 25 under the age of 26, or under the age of 30 if the child is a 26 veteran, in order to be eligible for the program. 27 -1- LSB 1179DP (2) 88 kh/jh 1/ 1
