WHEREAS,
as
Iowa
commemorates
the
sesquicentennial

of
the
Civil
War,
we
honor
and
remember
those
who
gave
4
the
last
full
measure
of
devotion
to
save
the
union
and
5
bring
an
end
to
slavery;
and
6
WHEREAS,
the
six
Littleton
brothers
of
Louisa
7
County
all
answered
President
Abraham
Lincoln’s
call
8
for
volunteers
——
and
by
1864
all
were
dead,
without
9
knowing
the
ultimate
victory
their
sacrifice
made
10
possible;
and
11
WHEREAS,
in
1861,
Thomas,
25,
enlisted
on
July
16
12
into
Company
C
of
the
5th
Iowa
Infantry,
was
captured
13
during
the
Battle
of
Missionary
Ridge
and
died
in
14
Andersonville
Prison;
and
15
WHEREAS,
William,
24,
followed
into
Company
K
16
of
the
8th
Iowa
Infantry
on
September
21,
fought
at
17
Shiloh,
Jackson,
and
Vicksburg,
and
died
of
disease
in
18
1863;
and
19
WHEREAS,
George,
the
oldest
at
33,
enlisted
in
20
1862,
and
returned
home
later
that
year
and
died
of
21
disease;
and
22
WHEREAS,
the
other
three
brothers,
John,
31,
23
Kendall,
19,
and
Noah,
16,
enlisted
together
into
24
Company
F
of
the
19th
Iowa
Infantry
on
August
21,
25
1862,
and
fought
in
the
Battle
of
Prairie
Grove,
with
26
Kendall
being
killed
and
his
two
brothers
dying
soon

thereafter;
and

WHEREAS,
the
war
had
ripped
the
Littleton
family
1
asunder,
leaving
only
three
orphaned
sisters
to
mourn
2
their
loss
and
keep
the
memory
of
their
brothers
3
alive;
NOW
THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That
5
the
House
of
Representatives
honors
the
whole
Littleton
6
family,
brothers
and
sisters
alike,
who
put
themselves
7
in
harm’s
way
and
paid
the
ultimate
price,
all
to
save
8
the
union
and
to
make
America
a
land
of
the
free.
