WHEREAS,
Marfan
syndrome
is
a
genetic
disorder
that
3
affects
the
body’s
connective
tissue;
and
4
WHEREAS,
connective
tissue
allows
bones,
ligaments,
5
muscles,
blood
vessels,
and
heart
valves
to
stay
strong
6
and
flexible;
and
7
WHEREAS,
approximately
1
in
5,000
people
have
Marfan
8
syndrome
and
the
genetic
disorder
affects
men
and
women
9
of
all
races
and
ethnic
groups;
and
10
WHEREAS,
roughly
three
out
of
every
four
people
with
11
Marfan
syndrome
inherit
the
genetic
disorder
from
a
12
parent;
and
13
WHEREAS,
recognizing
the
signs
and
symptoms
of
14
Marfan
syndrome
can
save
lives,
but
the
signs
and
15
symptoms
of
the
genetic
disorder
vary
greatly
depending
16
on
the
part
of
the
body
affected;
and
17
WHEREAS,
the
most
common
symptoms
of
Marfan
syndrome
18
include
disproportionately
long
arms,
legs,
and
19
fingers,
an
indented
chest
bone,
an
abnormally
curved
20
spine,
and
heart
murmurs;
and
21
WHEREAS,
there
is
no
cure
for
Marfan
syndrome,
there
22
are
various
treatment
options,
including
medication,
23
limitations
on
physical
activity,
surgery,
and
methods
24
to
prevent
or
manage
complications
of
the
genetic
25
disorder;
and
26
WHEREAS,
organizations
like
the
Michael
Henter
27
Foundation
are
raising
awareness
of
Marfan
syndrome
by

the
story
of
Michael’s
life
and
the
impact
he

had
on
so
many;
and

WHEREAS,
it
is
imperative
that
residents
of
this

state
are
aware
of
Marfan
syndrome
in
order
to
promote

early
diagnosis
and
the
discovery
of
a
cure;
NOW
5
THEREFORE,
6
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That
7
the
House
of
Representatives
designates
the
month
of
8
February
2024
as
Marfan
Syndrome
Awareness
Month
in
9
Iowa;
and
10
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
House
of
11
Representatives
recognizes
the
importance
of
spreading
12
awareness
about
Marfan
syndrome
and
encouraging
13
research
opportunities
to
find
a
cure
for
the
genetic
14
disorder;
and
15
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
House
of
16
Representatives
respectfully
requests
the
Chief
Clerk
17
of
the
House
of
Representatives
to
transmit
a
copy
of
18
this
resolution
to
the
Michael
Henter
Foundation
and
19
the
Marfan
Foundation.
