WHEREAS,
Canada
and
the
United
States
share
a
5
5,500-mile
border,
the
world’s
longest
unmilitarized
6
border,
over
which
300,000
people
cross
between
the
7
countries
every
day;
and
8
WHEREAS,
our
two
nations
share
a
peaceful
and
9
democratic
heritage
which
spans
centuries;
and
10
WHEREAS,
with
these
shared
traditions,
values,
and
11
heritage
our
two
nations
have
fostered
one
of
the
most
12
successful
international
relationships
in
the
modern
13
world;
and
14
WHEREAS,
acting
as
partners
in
peace
and
allies
in
15
war,
for
over
100
years
Canada
and
the
United
States
16
have
stood
together,
promoting
mutual
prosperity
and
17
fighting
tyranny
and
terrorism
in
a
partnership
that
18
remains
resolute
today;
and
19
WHEREAS,
the
United
States
is
Canada’s
largest
20
export
market,
with
two-way
trade
in
goods
and
21
services
between
the
nations
totaling
$710
billion,
or
22
approximately
$1.4
million
every
minute,
reflecting
the
23
deep
integration
of
our
nations’
economies;
and

the
relationship
between
Canada
and

Iowa
is
equally
strong,
consisting
of
a
complex
and

growing
network
of
social,
economic,
and
even
familial

ties;
and

WHEREAS,
it
is
estimated
that
over
100,000
jobs

in
Iowa
are
supported
by
Canada-United
States
trade
6
and
3,700
Iowans
are
employed
by
Canadian-owned
7
businesses;
and
8
WHEREAS,
Canada
is
Iowa’s
top
export
market,
9
with
Iowa
exports
to
Canada
valued
annually
at
$4.3
10
billion
and
Iowa
imports
from
Canada
valued
at
$3.1
11
billion;
and
12
WHEREAS,
Iowa
exports
to
Canada
include
steel
13
products,
oilseed
cake
and
meal,
organic
chemicals,
14
air
conditioning
and
refrigeration
units,
and
15
tractors,
while
Iowa
imports
include
natural
gas,
oils,
16
fertilizers,
live
animals,
and
steel
products;
NOW

THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That

the
House
of
Representatives
honors
the
relationships
20
between
the
peoples
and
the
governments
of
Canada,
21
the
United
States,
and
Iowa,
friends
and
neighbors
22
in
peace,
allies
in
war,
and
partners
in
economic
23
prosperity;
and
24
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
in
honor
of
our
strong
25
and
growing
relationship,
the
House
of
Representatives
26
recognizes
Tuesday,
February
4,
2014,
as
Canada
Day
at
27
the
Iowa
Capitol.
