H.F. 578 Section 1. IOWA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH —— ALTERNATIVE 1 METHODS FOR DISPOSAL OF BODY —— STUDY. The Iowa department of 2 public health, in consultation with interested stakeholders, 3 including but not limited to the Iowa funeral directors 4 association, the Iowa board of mortuary science examiners, 5 and the Iowa department of natural resources, shall conduct a 6 study on whether to authorize the use of alkaline hydrolysis 7 as a method of disposing of a body of a deceased person. At a 8 minimum, the study shall consider what additional requirements 9 would be necessary if alkaline hydrolysis was authorized in 10 this state. The department shall submit a report regarding 11 the study, including its findings and recommendations, to the 12 general assembly by January 1, 2020. 13 EXPLANATION 14 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 15 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 16 This bill requires the Iowa department of public health to 17 conduct a study on whether to authorize the use of alkaline 18 hydrolysis as a method of disposing of a body of a deceased 19 person.
