House File 2248 - Introduced HOUSE FILE BY BACON A BILL FOR 1 An Act relating to the speed limit on the interstate road 2 system. 3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA: TLSB 5568YH (1) 86 ns/nh PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 321.285, subsection 5, paragraph a, Code 1 2 2016, is amended to read as follows: 1 3 a. Notwithstanding any other speed restrictions, the speed 1 4 limit for all vehicular traffic on fully controlled=access, 1 5 divided, multilaned highways is sixty=five miles per hour. 1 6 However, the speed limit for all vehicular traffic on highways 1 7 that are part of the interstate road system, as defined in 1 8 section 306.3, is seventy miles per hour, except the department 1 9 may establish a speed limit of seventy=five miles per hour on 1 10 highways that are part of the interstate road system on the 1 11 department's own motion or in response to a recommendation 1 12 of a metropolitan or regional planning commission or council 1 13 of governments. The department may establish a speed limit 1 14 of sixty=five miles per hour on certain divided, multilaned 1 15 highways not otherwise described in this paragraph. 1 16 EXPLANATION 1 17 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 1 18 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly. 1 19 Under current law, the speed limit on interstate highways 1 20 is 70 miles per hour. This bill allows the department of 1 21 transportation (DOT) to establish a speed limit of 75 miles 1 22 per hour on interstate highways on the DOT's own motion or in 1 23 response to a recommendation of a metropolitan or regional 1 24 planning commission or council of governments.
