H.F. 190 Section 1. Section 91A.5A, subsection 1, Code 2019, is 1 amended to read as follows: 2 1. An employer shall provide each employee who is a 3 veteran , as defined in section 35.1 , with holiday time off for 4 Veterans Day, November 11, if the employee would otherwise be 5 required to work on that day, as provided in this section . 6 For purposes of this section, “veteran” means a veteran, as 7 defined in section 35.1, and additionally includes a member of 8 the reserved forces of the United States or the Iowa national 9 guard, regardless of the time served, who continues to serve or 10 who was discharged under honorable conditions. 11 EXPLANATION 12 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 13 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 14 This bill relates to holiday time off for Veterans Day. 15 Currently, Code section 91A.5A uses the term “veteran” as 16 defined in Code section 35.1, which, among other designated 17 categories of individuals, includes former and current members 18 of the reserve forces of the United States and the Iowa 19 national guard who have served at least 20 years and who were 20 discharged under honorable conditions. The bill provides that 21 the term “veteran” be defined as in Code section 35.1, but 22 shall additionally include members of the reserved forces of 23 the United States or the Iowa national guard, regardless of the 24 time served, who continue to serve or who were discharged under 25 honorable conditions. 26 -1- LSB 2077YH (3) 88 mo/rn 1/ 1
