A RESOLUTION

Recognizing February 1, 2011, as End the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) is a horrific crime perpetrated by adult men and women who abuse children through prostitution; and

WHEREAS, Georgia is the first state to have begun scientifically tracking the number of adolescent girls victimized by CSEC across the state; and

WHEREAS, according to the Georgia Governor's Office for Children and Families, the number of CSEC victims doubled from approximately 250 to nearly 500 girls each month from late 2007 to early 2010; and

WHEREAS, according to A Future. Not A Past., a scientific study of men who buy sex with young females, 7,200 men pay for sex with an adolescent female each month in Georgia, accounting for 8,700 paid sex acts, and a significant portion of these men as "repeat customers"; and

WHEREAS, hundreds of grassroots activists will gather at the state capitol on February 1, 2011, to raise awareness about the need to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Street GRACE, A Future. Not A Past., and Wellspring Living have worked together to organize and empower tens of thousands of grassroots activists across the state of Georgia to end CSEC; and

WHEREAS, over 4,000 Georgians attended the premiere of The Candy Shop, a film about CSEC, at Fox Theatre and hosted by Street GRACE; and

WHEREAS, after several years developing a first-of-its-kind coordinated statewide effort to end CSEC, Georgia was the first state under study to begin seeing a systematic decline in the number of adolescent CSEC victims.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize February 1, 2011, as End the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Day at the state capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Street GRACE and Wellspring Living.
