A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending the life and works of the Honorable John C. Fremont; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, John C. Fremont was born on January 21, 1813, in Savannah, Georgia, and would distinguish himself as one of the most dedicated Georgians of the 19th century; and

WHEREAS, he found a commitment to serving the greater good by which he entered into the service of the Atlantic Feet as one of the first commissioned educators of the United States Navy; and

WHEREAS, he received his degree from the College of Charleston, an accomplishment for a man of his time that demonstrated the importance of a higher education; and

WHEREAS, as one of the earliest adventurers and the first to explore much of what was the Wild West of North America, he helped map the Oregon Trail through the Northwest Passage, placed Las Vegas, Nevada, on the map of record, and was a great friend to many tribal leaders and Native Americans of the West, instilling loyalty to help him in his mission to serve the Republic; and

WHEREAS, he was appointed by the newly constituted State of California to serve as its first United States Senator; and

WHEREAS, advocating for the abolition of slavery, he became a leader of his day by establishing a new political movement dedicated to complete freedom for any and all enslaved and issued an order that has become known as the Nation's First Emancipation in 1861; and

WHEREAS, he served with great distinction in his noble course of a long life as the man from Savannah, Georgia, who helped expand the nation from sea to sea; and
WHEREAS, the Honorable John C. Fremont embodied the true spirit of a Georgia citizen and an American with his devotion to the service of his country, and his many achievements are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend the life and works of the Honorable John C. Fremont.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of the Honorable John C. Fremont.
