A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and celebrating the 100th birthday of the City of Arcade, Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the City of Arcade was established on August 17, 1909, and named by Reverend George D. Stone, minister of Arcade Presbyterian Church, who donated land for the city's first city hall and school, which he dreamed would become a great college; and

WHEREAS, the land of Arcade was known to produce great fields of cotton, and the first mayor of Arcade was B.F. Guest, the owner of the town's cotton gin; and

WHEREAS, named in recognition of the Greek heritage in education, the city has been home to several schools throughout its history, including the Old Elder Schoolhouse, dating from the mid-1880's; the Bachelor's Academy, built on land donated by Emory and Alec Shields; the Altalma; and the Arcade School, the first two-story school in the community; and

WHEREAS, Arcade is home to one of the first airports in Georgia, named Crawford W. Long Airport, which was used by the military as a fix-based station for many years; and

WHEREAS, for the past 100 years, Arcade has been on the forefront for community involvement, providing the first locations for meeting places for community clubs, social events, civic activities, and church functions and includes a mini-bike track, a large tree house, and ball fields; and

WHEREAS, also known as the Encore Azalea City, Arcade was the site of one of the country's first NASCAR tracks, and this rural community is growing with new businesses and new families making the area more vital each year; and

WHEREAS, the City of Arcade continues to look with optimism toward the future while keeping the proud memory of its beginning close to its heart to share with succeeding generations.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the City of Arcade on its distinguished 100 year history and join with the citizens and officials in celebrating its centennial.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the mayor of Arcade, Georgia.
