RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mr. Charles T. Huddleston and the Georgia Metros Girls Basketball
Club; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
founded in 1984, south DeKalb County's Georgia Metros Girls Basketball Club has
grown into one of the premier amateur basketball clubs in the country, serving
as a platform for showcasing young talent before college scouts;
and
WHEREAS,
the longtime coach and director of Georgia Metros Girls Basketball Club, Mr.
Charles T. Huddleston, has been instrumental in helping more than 350 high
school athletes earn scholarships to play basketball in college;
and
WHEREAS,
a labor law specialist by day, Mr. Huddleston devotes his free time to helping
athletes excel in the Georgia Metros Girls Basketball Club, many of whom come
from single-parent households in urban neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS,
serving as a beacon of hope for many athletes, Mr. Huddleston started coaching
for the Georgia Metros Girls Basketball Club in the early 1990's when his
daughter Julia, who is now an assistant woman's basketball coach at Virginia
Commonwealth University, played with the club; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Metros Girls Basketball Club typically fields ten teams with 130
student athletes learning sportsmanship and leadership through the program along
with improving their basketball skills and level of competition;
and
WHEREAS,
a graduate of the University of Tennessee where he served as student body
president, Mr. Huddleston is also active in encouraging women in politics, has
served as a fundraiser for the Atlanta Women's Foundation, and is a charter
founding member of the advisory council for Mayor Shirley Franklin's Atlanta
Women's Agenda; and
WHEREAS,
his dedication to uplifting women of all ages and encouraging them to realize
their potential was recognized by Georgia's Women in Numbers (WIN) List with its
first Men for WIN Award; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Huddleston has demonstrated his dedication to the Georgia Metros Girls
Basketball Club and its participants, helping athletes on and off the court, and
providing financial support to the program and its many outstanding initiatives;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Huddleston will be honored by
Atlanta Woman
Magazine as a 2008 Fan Male for his work
with the Georgia Metros Girls Basketball Club, his support of women for elective
office, and his diligent advocacy on behalf of women's causes and issues at the
Community Heroes Luncheon on March 24, 2009; and
WHEREAS,
the selfless efforts of Mr. Huddleston and the incredible work of the Georgia
Metros Girls Basketball Club are worthy of recognition.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
and commend the Georgia Metros Girls Basketball Club and its long-time director,
Mr. Charles T. Huddleston, for changing the lives and futures of countless young
female athletes in this state.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Charles T. Huddleston.
