A RESOLUTION

Commending Tony Smith; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, when Tony Smith moved to Atlanta after having served six years in the Navy, he heard about Atlanta Metropolitan College (AMC) on a local radio station, and, on further investigation, he decided that AMC was the perfect match for him, offering affordability, a caring faculty, and a sense of community; and

WHEREAS, Tony quickly embraced AMC's motto, "Believe, Begin, Become," and he has excelled academically in his chosen field of study, political science, maintaining a 3.79 grade point average. He intends to pursue a master's degree in international studies and eventually obtain a doctorate in Political Science; and

WHEREAS, Tony notes that AMC has been the vehicle which has allowed him to pursue his passions, and he quickly immersed himself in campus life, becoming actively involved in the Student Commission, AMC's student government association, as well as serving as treasurer and chairing the judiciary committee, leading the campus's Political Science Association, founding the Advocate Student Association, and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the premiere international honor society for two-year colleges; and

WHEREAS, Tony's sense of community, leadership, and volunteerism also extends to his larger community. He has worked diligently in volunteer initiatives that include feeding the hungry and homeless, HIV/AIDS and STD outreach, education, and services, and he feels that giving back is not a choice, rather a requirement; and

WHEREAS, when asked to sum up his experiences at AMC, Tony states, "AMC has been a catalyst in cultivating my potential."

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Tony Smith for his academic successes and for his proven leadership abilities and express confidence that he will enjoy continued success in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Tony Smith.
