A RESOLUTION

Requesting the President of the United States, Barack Obama, to select Mr. Thomas J. Harrold, Jr., to serve as the United States Ambassador to Germany; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, over the past 30 years, Thomas J. Harrold has done more to foster good will and good business between the United Sates and Germany than any other single individual; and

WHEREAS, in 1978, Mr. Harrold helped to establish the German-American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) office in Atlanta and currently serves on the Board of Directors and as Secretary of the GACC for the Southern United States which stretches from Texas to North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, he also organized and chaired the German Unification Conference in 2003 which attracted more than 2,000 people and 56 media representatives and celebrated the theme of political change without war; and

WHEREAS, Tom Harrold has been representing German investors for 30 years and has brought those international dollars to this nation, including large German automotive companies which have been investing heavily in the South, especially during the past decade; and

WHEREAS, if Mr. Harrold were named the ambassador to Germany he would use his experience with German businesses and leaders to recruit more international investment and jobs to the United States; and

WHEREAS, in the past 20 years only two men from Georgia have received diplomatic appointments, and no southerner has been appointed United States Ambassador to Germany since 1958; and
WHEREAS, there are currently more than 600 German companies with subsidiaries in the southeastern United States, and it is most appropriate that the next United States Ambassador to Germany be a native of this area of our country.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body request President Barack Obama to select Thomas J. Harrold, Jr., to serve as the next United States Ambassador to Germany.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to President Barack Obama and to each member of the Georgia congressional delegation.
