A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Dr. Katheryn "K.M." Vernethea Middleton Brown; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Dr. Katheryn Vernethea Middleton Brown on February 13, 2011;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Brown was born on June 13, 1921, in Charleston, South Carolina, a beloved
daughter of the late Margaret E. Wheaton Middleton and Reverend Jesse E.
Middleton, Sr.; and
WHEREAS,
educated in the public schools of Charleston, Dr. Brown earned a bachelor's
degree from Allen University, master's degrees from Cornell University and
Atlanta University, and doctoral degrees from Ball State University and Atlanta
University; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Brown dedicated 44 years to uplifting the lives of students as an educator,
teaching biology and horticulture at Booker T. Washington, Henry McNeal Turner,
and Frederick Douglass high schools in Atlanta and serving as assistant
principal at Walter F. George High School; and
WHEREAS,
this highly respected educator was known for being a tough, firm, yet fair
teacher and was a formidable force for the students who had the opportunity to
learn from her; and
WHEREAS,
a woman of deep and abiding faith, Dr. Brown was an active in the African
Methodist Episcopal Church and belonged to Atlanta's Cosmopolitan AME Church;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Brown was united in love and marriage to the late Hasell David Brown, Sr.,
and was blessed with the support of her children, Hasell and Michele Brown;
and
WHEREAS,
in addition to her children, she leaves behind many who will cherish her memory,
including her stepgrandchildren, Daniel M.D. Brown and Michael and Sheila
Obleton; and her siblings, Ernest and Thelma Middleton, Adele M. Weathers, Rose
S. Middleton, and Mabel Middleton; and
WHEREAS,
she gave inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for her fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding she
demonstrated to her family and friends were admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of
her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous woman, Dr. Brown will long be remembered for her
love of family and friendship, and this loyal mother, grandmother, sister, and
friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing
her.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of Dr. Katheryn Vernethea Middleton Brown and
express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Katheryn
Vernethea Middleton Brown.
