A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Dr. Susan Herbst; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Susan Herbst has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the
vital role that she has played in leadership and her deep personal commitment to
the welfare of the students of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Herbst has diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of her
time, talents, and energy toward the betterment of this state as evidenced
dramatically by her superlative service with the University System of Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
as Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer for the University
System of Georgia, Dr. Herbst has overseen all academic programs for Georgia's
35 public colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS,
she has also served as a professor of public policy at the Georgia Institute of
Technology, inspiring future leaders of this nation with her curriculum and
experience; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Herbst earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Duke University
and a doctoral degree in communication theory from the University of Southern
California; served on the faculty at Northwestern University; was provost,
executive vice president, and acting president at SUNY-Albany; and was a dean at
Temple University; and
WHEREAS,
she is the author of many scholarly journal articles and books, including her
most recent book about incivility in American politics entitled
Rude
Democracy; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Herbst has been selected to serve as the 15th president of the University of
Connecticut, becoming the first woman to hold the prestigious position since the
school's founding in 1881; and
WHEREAS,
a dynamic and energetic leader, Dr. Herbst was chosen for the position from over
100 applicants due to her exceptional leadership abilities, vision, strong
academic background, in-depth understanding of higher education, and personable
nature; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Herbst has served with honor and distinction with the University System of
Georgia, and her vision and unyielding commitment will be sorely missed upon her
departure.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body express
their gratitude to Dr. Susan Herbst for her efficient, effective, unselfish, and
dedicated public service to the State of Georgia and extend to her best wishes
in her position as President of the University of Connecticut.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Susan Herbst.
