A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., on the occasion of its centennial anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity was incorporated on January 5, 1911, on the campus of Indiana University by ten young men determined to create a brotherhood that would provide a sense of belonging and empowerment to combat prejudices, discrimination, social isolation, and exclusion; and

WHEREAS, the founding brothers included Honorable Elder Watson Diggs, Byron Kenneth Armstrong, Guy Levis Grant, Ezra D. Alexander, Henry T. Asher, Marcus Peter Blakemore, Paul Waymond Caine, George Wesley Edmonds, Edward Giles Irvin, and John Milton Lee; and

WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi has five objectives: to unite college men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond of fraternity; to encourage honorable achievement in every field of human endeavor; to promote the spiritual, social, intellectual, and moral welfare of its members; to assist in the aims and purposes of colleges and universities; and to inspire service in the public interest; and

WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity provides an invaluable service to the community through its national service program, the Guide Right Program, which was founded in 1921 as an ad hoc committee to study the needs of Greek letter chapters but grew into a much broader concept of assisting high school seniors with identifying and selecting useful careers; and

WHEREAS, members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity have made lasting contributions by aspiring to achieve in all fields of human endeavors, and some past and present exemplars from the membership include Dr. Reverend Ralph David Abernathy, Arthur Schomburg, Whitman Mayo, Arthur Ashe, Johnnie L. Cochran, Lerone J. Bennett, Dr. Henry Foster, Tavis Smiley, and Georgia Congressman Sanford Bishop; and

WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has over 23,500 active members and 800 undergraduate and alumni chapters worldwide, including over 1,500 active members and 35 undergraduate and alumni chapters in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding work of this fine organization and its numerous contributions to the citizens of this state be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body congratulate Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity on its 100th anniversary, recognize the legacy of achievement and the contributions its members have made to the world community, and extend best wishes for continued success in their ongoing efforts to make a profound impact and footprint on the world.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
