A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Model United Nations and Model Arab League programs of
Georgia State University, and their coach, Dr. Rashid Naim; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Georgia State University's Model United Nations and Model Arab League programs
have been recognized as the competitive standard in regional and national
diplomatic simulations since their founding seven years ago; and
WHEREAS,
a recipient of the International Studies Education Excellence Award from Georgia
State University, Dr. Rashid Naim has served as the faculty advisor for the
school's award-winning Model United Nations and Model Arab League teams since
2004; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Naim served as a research fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies in
which his research included work on the theories of legitimacy in Muslim
political thought with a particular reference to the Middle East;
and
WHEREAS,
Georgia State University's Model United Nations and Model Arab League are
further recognized as one of the many academic opportunities provided by Georgia
State University that not only brings about a variety of communication and
critical thinking skills, but also aims at educating its participants about the
intricacies of modern international politics; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia State University Model United Nations team competes in the Southern
Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) conference and the National Model United
Nations (NMUN) conference, having won the Outstanding Delegation Award at
nationals for the past four years and five consecutive Honorable Mention Awards
at regionals; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia State University Model Arab League team competes in the Southeast
Regional Model Arab League (SERMAL) conference and the National Model Arab
League (NMAL) conference, winning the Outstanding Delegation Award at regionals
for the past seven years and the Outstanding Delegation Award at nationals in
2010; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Naim serves as the director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of
Political Science at Georgia State University and has served as a senior
lecturer at the university since 1993, teaching courses such as Global Issues,
Comparative Politics, International Relations, Model United Nations, Model Arab
League, Religion and Politics, and the Middle East in World Affairs;
and
WHERAS,
prior to joining Georgia State University, Dr. Naim taught at Oxford University,
the University of Illinois, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and
Union College; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Rashid Naim has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the
vital role that he has played in higher education and his deep personal
commitment to the students of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of
this distinguished Georgian, and the competitive programs that he’s
established, be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Georgia State University's Model United Nations and Model Arabic League programs
for their formidable and consistent competitive records, as well as their
instructor, Dr. Rashid Naim, for his sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and
contributions on the behalf of education in Georgia and for the positive
influence he has and will continue to have upon the lives and futures of
countless young people in this state.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Rashid Naim.
