A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color Atlanta publisher, Ms. Linda Torrence; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Ms. Linda Torrence has been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role she has played in promoting women's health and her deep commitment to the well-being of women; and

WHEREAS, the mission of Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color is to help women throughout Georgia and the world develop healthy lifestyle regiments by concentrating on their own health; and

WHEREAS, publications include feature articles by physicians who specialize in treating women, professionals who specialize in women's health, and everyday women who share their health stories to encourage other women; and

WHEREAS, Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color focuses on health issues, such as nutrition, fitness, prevention, stress, depression, and in-depth information on breast and colorectal cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, Type 2 Diabetes, lung cancer, and other diseases; and

WHEREAS, in Georgia, women of color account for approximately one-third of all adult women, yet ethnic women continue to account for a disproportionate number of deaths related to a wide range of health disparities; and

WHEREAS, inspired by his mother's death from heart disease, founder and group publisher Matthew Johnson brought Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color to Georgia to address health disparities among this population; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Linda Torrence became the Atlanta publisher one year after Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color's debut in Atlanta following a long career in broadcast and cable television; and

WHEREAS, before joining the Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color team, Ms. Torrence was the director of community affairs with FOX5 Atlanta, and her leadership and vision have been instrumental on numerous boards, including the DeKalb and Atlanta Chambers of Commerce, the American Heart Association, and Grady Health Systems Foundations; and

WHEREAS, she is active with Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, Georgia Partnership for Education Excellence, Georgia's Commission on Women, Georgia Women's Institute, and Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Sindab Project; and

WHEREAS, through a partnership with Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color, she continues her selfless service to women of Georgia and serves as a exemplary example of leadership and vision to inspire women in Georgia, her community, colleagues, and peers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize Ms. Linda Torrence for her work with Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color and commend her years of dedicated service to Georgia's women.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Linda Torrence.
