RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Kidney Transplant Program
for performing its 500th kidney transplant on January 28, 2011; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Kidney Transplant Program was established
in 1980 to provide dedicated diagnostic and treatment service for children with
complex and lifelong kidney disorders, high blood pressure, and fluid and
electrolyte imbalances; and
WHEREAS,
Children's is only the second pediatric kidney transplant program in the
Southeast to achieve the milestone of performing 500 kidney transplants;
and
WHEREAS,
the Kidney Transplant Program is recognized nationally among the country's top
programs for pediatric kidney transplant volumes; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Leonard C. Hymes and Dr. Barry Warshaw have helped the Kidney Transplant
Program and pediatric dialysis unit become a national leader in pediatric
nephrology; and
WHEREAS,
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is home to the only dedicated pediatric
dialysis unit in Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
the Kidney Transplant Program performed 21 transplants in 2010, and that same
year, Children's completed its first paired exchanged kidney transplant;
and
WHEREAS,
the program has worked in close collaboration with Emory University School of
Medicine to help pioneer advances in pediatric kidney transplantation;
and
WHEREAS,
this program has achieved three-year patient survival rates that exceed the
national average; and
WHEREAS,
Children's utilizes a family-centered care model in all of its service lines
that includes a multi-disciplinary team of pediatric experts to provide
high-quality health care, including physical therapists, certified
schoolteachers, clinical nutritionists, and child life specialists;
and
WHEREAS,
the dedicated and respected staff of the Kidney Transplant Program strives daily
to deliver the highest quality medical care to their patients; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding work of this fine
program and its numerous contributions to children be appropriately
recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the faculty and staff of the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Kidney Transplant
Program for their remarkable milestone and for making Georgia home to a national
leader in pediatric kidney transplantation.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Children's Healthcare
of Atlanta Kidney Transplant Program's medical director, Dr. Barry Warshaw and
to Dr. Leonard Hymes.
