A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Captain Joe Vickery; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the state of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its finest and most distinguished citizens with the untimely passing of Captain Joe Vickery on November 21, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Captain Vickery devoted 32 years to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Resources Division; and

WHEREAS, known as a gentle giant at six feet five inches and 270 pounds, Captain Vickery was a steadfast, loyal, honest, and genuine man; and

WHEREAS, Captain Vickery began his career with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in 1977 as an hourly wage deckhand and was promoted to a wildlife technician two years later; and

WHEREAS, he was crew member aboard the research vessels Anna, Cobia, Bagby, and Marguerite and became a R/V Captain II, the highest vessel captain classification possible within the DNR, of the Marguerite in 2003; and

WHEREAS, Captain Vickery received numerous commendations from the United States Coast Guard for his assistance training servicemen and women at USCG Station Brunswick, and he served as a pillar of the DNR organization; and

WHEREAS, his work was instrumental in the design and construction of many of Georgia's offshore artificial reefs, enhancing and protecting wildlife habitat and providing numerous recreational opportunities for anglers and divers; and

WHEREAS, Captain Vickery was an avid and skilled diver himself and enjoyed spear fishing off the many reefs he helped create; and
WHEREAS, the DNR held a benefit in Captain Vickery's honor on January 17, 2009, celebrating the life of this kind, intelligent, and generous man and raising money to establish college funds for his two children; and

WHEREAS, the event served as an excellent forum for friends and co-workers to show their gratitude for his many contributions to coastal Georgia and their lives; and

WHEREAS, Captain Vickery will long be remembered and cherished by his many friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors who will carry with them the memories of wonderful times shared.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Captain Joe Vickery.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Captain Vickery.
