A RESOLUTION


Commending Carolyn Virginia Brown Crowder; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Carolyn Virginia Brown Crowder has long been recognized by the citizens of Atlanta for the vital role that she has played in leadership and her deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, she was educated at Oglethorpe Elementary School, Jonesboro Colored Elementary School, Fountain High School, and Price High School; and

WHEREAS, she has long had a keen interest in education, and she served as a parent volunteer at T.H. Slater Elementary School, a grade parent and P.T.A. officer at Guice Elementary School, president of the Fulton High School P.T.A., first African-American president of the Atlanta Council P.T.A., and first African-American director of the Georgia P.T.A. Eighth District Council; and

WHEREAS, she organized the Band Booster Club at Fulton High School and served as president for four years; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Crowder served as a member of the Atlanta Board of Education, District 8 representative, from 1973 to 1989 and served as vice president for one term, and as a public servant she was truly an advocate for children of the Atlanta Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Crowder organized and conducted the Clayton County Black History Quiz Bowl at Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesboro for approximately ten years, and this event inspired citizens to learn about African American contributions and achievements and encouraged students to study Black history; and

WHEREAS, an active member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church since 1959, she became the children's choir director and pianist in 1966 and served until her retirement in December, 2010; and

WHEREAS, she has been married to Paul Crowder for 53 years, and the couple has six children, 21 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable, heroic, and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Carolyn Virginia Brown Crowder for her years of efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service to the citizens of her community and state and extend to her their most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Carolyn Virginia Brown Crowder.
