A RESOLUTION

Recognizing March 1, 2011, as Columbus Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Columbus region of Georgia is known for its fantastic visitor attractions, expansive economic growth and development, and beautiful natural landscapes; and

WHEREAS, the region is known for its public and private partnerships that have generated success for the area with projects such as the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts and the Valley Partnership Joint Development Authority; and

WHEREAS, for nearly 15 years, the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce has journeyed to larger cities around the country to learn how to improve the Columbus area and identify what steps can be taken to foster growth and development; and

WHEREAS, Columbus is home to numerous national and international companies, including Aflac, Carmike Cinemas, Fort Benning, Synovus, TSYS, and the W.C. Bradley Company; and

WHEREAS, Columbus currently features exciting attractions such as the 15 mile Riverwalk, the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the Columbus Convention and Trade Center, the Columbus Civic Center, the South Commons softball complex, historic Golden Park, a skateboard park, the Columbus Museum, and the Springer Opera House; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of the Greater Columbus region are justly proud of their community, its past, and its many contributions to this state, and it is only proper to recognize March 1, 2011, as Columbus Day at the state capitol.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize March 1, 2011, as Columbus Day at the state capitol and congratulate the Greater Columbus region on its many outstanding accomplishments.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce.
