A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. Walter Curtis Butler, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss one of its most distinguished citizens and dedicated public servants with the passing of Mr. Walter Curtis Butler, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, born in Morgan County, Georgia, on December 12, 1943, Mr. Butler was the beloved son of the late Hattie Mae Mitchell Butler and Walter Curtis Butler, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Butler graduated from Pearl High School in 1962, and was known throughout his community for his leadership skills and commitment to Morgan County and the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, a jack of all trades, Mr. Butler's career consisted of assorted positions, such as a supervisor for Watertown Manufacturer, a certified USDA meat inspector for the Georgia Department of Agriculture, a shipping supervisor for Nimslo-3 Dimension Camera, and a customer service and account analyst for AT&T, retiring from Lucent Technologies in 2004 as an account analyst; and

WHEREAS, an active life member of the NAACP, Mr. Butler helped found the organization's Morgan County branch where he served as treasurer, president, and chairman of the life membership committee; and

WHEREAS, a man of great faith and devotion, Mr. Butler was an active member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the board of deacons, Treasurer of Mt. Zion's building fund, assistant Sunday school superintendent, and was a member of the trustee board and the senior choir; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Butler gave generously of his time to many important civic and public organizations, such as the Northeast Georgia Leadership Council, the Morgan County Democratic Party, the Democratic Party of Georgia, the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, the Morgan County Civic League, and the Fannie Lou Hammer Project; and

WHEREAS, his great service to the public and his community was honored with his receipt of such awards as the NAACP Club 100, the Southeast Region Medgar Evans Award, the Voter Empowerment Award, the Georgia State Conference Ruby Hurley Award, and the Earl T. Shinhoster Freedom Fighter Award; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Butler was united in love and marriage to Laura B. Wilson Butler on June 2, 1967, and the two were blessed with three loving and devoted children, Lavelle, Celeste, and Curtis; and

WHEREAS, a great source of pride and joy, Mr. Butler also had five grandsons: Terry, Michael, Christopher, Caleb, and Jaden; and

WHEREAS, all who were privileged to know this distinguished Georgian join his family in mourning his loss.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body hereby joins in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Walter Curtis Butler, Jr., and expressing its appreciation of his many contributions to his community and the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Butler's family.
