RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mrs. Diane Caves; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the tragic passing of Mrs. Diane Caves on January 12, 2010, during the
earthquake in Haiti; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Caves was born on September 19, 1978, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the beloved
daughter of Lee and Linda Berry and graduated in the top of her class from Oak
Ridge High School in 1996; and
WHEREAS,
she earned a bachelor's degree in French and policy studies from Rice University
and a master's degree in public administration from Georgia State University,
where she was honored with the Public Administration Achievement Award in 2008
and was pursuing a master's degree in public health at the time of her passing;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Caves worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a
policy analyst in the Office of Health Preparedness and Response, and she was
named 2009 Federal Employee of the Year for Atlanta in the Outstanding
Professional Category at the age of 30; and
WHEREAS,
in 2008, Mrs. Caves led the development of the CDC's first comprehensive
nation-wide report on public health preparedness, which launched a regular
series of reports that demonstrate accountability and drive program improvements
to help protect the United States from public health emergencies;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Caves was united in love and marriage to Jeff Caves on January 2, 2004, and
the couple resided in Atlanta with their beloved rescue dog, Preston;
and
WHEREAS,
an avid soccer player and world traveler, Mrs. Caves hiked both the Andes and
European Alps and enjoyed downhill skiing, reading, ultimate frisbee, and
knitting; and
WHEREAS,
she gave inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for her fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding she
demonstrated to her family and friends were admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of
her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous woman, Mrs. Caves will long be remembered for her
love of family and friendship, and this loyal wife, sister, and friend will be
missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Diane Caves and express their deepest and
most sincere regret at her passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mrs. Diane
Caves.
