WHEREAS,
since our nation's founding, Americans have turned to prayer for inspiration,
strength, and guidance; and
WHEREAS,
a National Day of Prayer was first established by the Continental Congress in
1775, and the United States Congress in 1952 approved a joint resolution setting
aside a day each year to recognize the tradition of prayer in our land;
and
WHEREAS,
a National Day of Prayer enables the people of this nation to recall and to
teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced
with critical decisions; and
WHEREAS,
there have been 135 national calls to prayer, humility, fasting, and
thanksgiving by the President of the United States since 1789; and
WHEREAS,
there have been 57 presidential proclamations for a National Day of Prayer and
this year's National Day of Prayer will be observed on May 6, 2010;
and
WHEREAS,
South Fulton County will observe National Day of Prayer at Fairburn United
Methodist Church in Fairburn, Georgia, where Dr. Detrius Jones of Hands of
Praise International Ministries will serve as speaker; and
WHEREAS,
South Fulton County's observation of National Day of Prayer will unite the
citizens of South Fulton County and the nation through the prayers of local
pastors, church leaders, government officials, business owners, and civic
leaders; and
WHEREAS,
the National Day of Prayer encourages Americans of every faith to give thanks
for God's many blessings and to pray for each other and our nation;
and
WHEREAS,
on this day it is fitting that we pray especially for the brave men and women of
the United States Armed Forces who are serving their country around the
world.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
acknowledge the importance of faith and prayer in life and recognize South
