A RESOLUTION

Urging the Capitol Art Standards Commission to accept a replacement plaque for installation on the sculpture entitled Expelled Because of their Color presently located on the capitol grounds; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on the northeast side of the state capitol stands a statue entitled Expelled Because of their Color memorializing the 33 African American legislators who were expelled from the General Assembly in 1868; and

WHEREAS, in 1978, the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials met in the rotunda of the capitol to dedicate a marker honoring the black elected officials who served in the General Assembly between 1963 and 1978, and that plaque was placed in front of the statue; and

WHEREAS, the plaque that was dedicated in 1978 was replaced by a new plaque in the past, but several of the original names were omitted from the new plaque; and

WHEREAS, the Legislative Black Caucus is willing and desirous of paying for a new plaque that restores the original list of honored names.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body urge the Capitol Art Standards Commission to accept a new plaque as provided in this resolution and install such plaque in its rightful place.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Capitol Art Standards Commission.
