A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the Department of Transportation to place appropriate signage for Meadow Garden;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Meadow Garden is a quiet and inviting oasis in the midst of the medical and
technological center of Augusta, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
it was the home of George Walton, one of the Georgia signers of the Declaration
of Independence; and
WHEREAS,
some 200 years ago, George, his wife Dorothy, and their two sons, Thomas and
George, Jr., lived in the home; and
WHEREAS,
Meadow Garden is located near the Augusta Canal which runs along one side of the
house, and on the grounds there are beautiful flower gardens and an herb garden;
and
WHEREAS,
the farm home is one of Georgia's oldest dwellings and is a National Historic
Landmark; it is filled with 18th and 19th Century American and English
furnishings, porcelains, paintings, and household equipment.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body urge the
Department of Transportation to place appropriate signage on the interstate
highways close to Meadow Garden to invite visitors to this charming and
educational site.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Augusta City Council
and the Department of Transportation.
