A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Senator Max Cleland on the occasion of his 70th birthday; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Senator Max Cleland was born on August 24, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia, a beloved son of Hugh and Juanita Cleland; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Stetson University, Senator Cleland went on to be a strong advocate for the men and women of our armed services; and

WHEREAS, he is a decorated Vietnam veteran, and on April 8, 1968, Captain Cleland was the Battalion Signal Officer for the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division during the Battle of Khe Sanh; and

WHEREAS, Senator Cleland was injured in battle and was therefore awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for his actions in combat; and

WHEREAS, he served in the Georgia State Senate from 1971 to 1975, was an administrator for the United States Veterans Administration from 1977 to 1981, was Georgia's Secretary of State from 1982 to 1996, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996 where he served one term; and

WHEREAS, Senator Cleland has dedicated his entire life in service to the United States of America and the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Senator Cleland continues to give inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and sense of service, and his resolute courage and strength of will and spirit is a model for all Georgians and Americans; and

WHEREAS, his significant organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, his underlying loyalty and lasting friendship, and his sensitivity to the needs of the citizens of this state have earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and associates; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Senator Max Cleland for his efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service to the State of Georgia and his meritorious military service to the United States of America, congratulate him on the occasion of his 70th birthday, and extend to him their sincere best wishes for many more years of continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Senator Max Cleland.
